Kidney Treatments

The kidneys are two bean shaped organs located in the lower back and are the size of an adult hand fist. They are extraordinary organs and are the body’s chemists and waste disposal systems. They are intimately involved in every organ and system of the body.
Some key roles of the kidneys are to:

  • Remove waste products from the body
  • Regulate salt and water
  • Regulate minerals such as potassium, calcium and magnesium
  • Keep the acid-base balance within the body stable
  • Produce hormones such as vitamin D which keeps bones healthy
  • Produce a hormone called ‘erythropoietin’ which stimulate the bone marrow to produce red blood cells

They are vulnerable to certain insults, the most common being diabetes and hypertension, although the causes are numerous. Should the kidneys become upset or damaged, it may eventually lead to kidney failure, which without treatment, is universally fatal. Even when the kidneys are only mildly or moderately affected, their effects on other organs can lead to problems such as bone disease, anaemia and most importantly, an increased risk of a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke.

Here at West Shore Medical, we offer a comprehensive renal service.

  • Patients at risk of kidney disease, for example, patients with diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosis, patients with a family history of kidney disease, can be screened and monitored for kidney problems.
  • Patients with established kidney disease can be treated to ensure that the progression of their disease is delayed. In addition, all cardiovascular risk factors would be treated optimally to reduce the risk of a cardiovascular event as the kidneys create their own unique cardiovascular risk factors.
  • Patients with advanced chronic kidney disease can be counseled and prepared for renal replacement therapy in a controlled manner, thereby reducing the chance of any medical emergencies occurring.
  • All aspects of renal replacement therapy are provided which comprise haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and living donor kidney transplantation.

These treatments are undertaken by experienced medical and nursing staff, with an internationally trained nephrologist (kidney specialist) and a leading national transplant and vascular surgeon. The haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis equipment is state-of –the-art and clinical treatments comply and exceed internationally recommended standards(KDOQI and UK Renal Association Guidelines). This service is offered in a comfortable environment with all the necessary support services conveniently located within West Shore.
